Packing for a Winter Trip to Istanbul in December 2024

As the weather cools down and the festive spirit fills the air, Istanbul transforms into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. While the city's charm remains undimmed, packing for a December trip requires careful consideration of the chilly temperatures and occasional rainfall. Here's a comprehensive guide to ensure you're well-equipped for your Istanbul winter adventure:

Warm Layers: Embracing the layering principle is essential for a comfortable winter experience in Istanbul. Pack a variety of long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a fleece jacket to adjust to fluctuating temperatures. A warm and cozy coat is a must-have for chilly evenings and outdoor explorations.

Waterproof Outerwear: Istanbul's winters can be unpredictable, with occasional showers and chilly winds. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or rain poncho to protect yourself from unexpected downpours.

Warm Bottoms: Pairing warm bottoms with your layered tops is crucial for staying comfortable in the chilly weather. Pack a few pairs of jeans, leggings, or warm trousers to keep your legs protected from the cold.

Comfortable Footwear: Navigating Istanbul's cobbled streets and bustling bazaars requires comfortable footwear. Pack a pair of sturdy ankle boots or sneakers that provide good traction and support.

Essential Accessories: Keep your extremities warm with a scarf, hat, and gloves. A pair of waterproof gloves is particularly useful for protecting your hands from the cold and damp.

Personal Care Items: Pack your usual toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and sunscreen, regardless of the season. Additionally, consider bringing a moisturizing lotion to combat dry skin caused by cold weather.

Travel Essentials: Pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your explorations. A small backpack or crossbody bag is convenient for carrying essentials like a camera, guidebook, and snacks.

Cultural Considerations: When packing for Istanbul, be mindful of local customs. Modest clothing is generally preferred, especially when visiting religious sites. Women may want to consider bringing a scarf to cover their heads and shoulders to enter mosques.

Electronics and Chargers: Pack the necessary chargers for your electronic devices, including your phone, camera, and laptop. A universal adapter may be useful if you're traveling from a different country.

Medications: If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an adequate supply for your trip. It's also advisable to pack over-the-counter pain relievers and stomach upset remedies.

Entertainment: Pack a book or download e-books to keep yourself entertained on long flights or during downtime. Consider bringing a portable music player or noise-canceling headphones to enhance your travel experience.

Emergency Supplies: Pack a small first-aid kit with essential items like bandages, pain relievers, and antiseptic wipes. A small flashlight and a portable phone charger can also be helpful in case of unexpected situations.

Souvenir Space: Leave some extra space in your luggage to bring back souvenirs from your Istanbul adventure. Consider purchasing local handicrafts, spices, or traditional Turkish sweets to cherish your memories.

This delicious hot drink, Salep is made from the tuberous roots of orchids. As with hot chocolate or chai spices, the dried flour is combined with other ingredients, such as sugar, cornstarch, powdered milk, cinnamon, and vanillin. Then voila! It is perfectly smooth, creamy, and sweet.

For Boza, you can go to the Vefa district which is famous for its boza places. For salep, there are plenty of cafes serving so you can decide which has the best salep for your taste.

Seb-i Arus Ceremonies & Whirling Dervishes Show

Sufi mystic, poet, and scholar Mevlana, also known as Rumi, and his teachings widely influenced mystical thought and literature throughout the world. Stories tell that Rumi, who was always a beloved figure in the Islamic world became immensely sad after the departure of his master Shams-i Tabrizi (Shams of Tabriz) with whom he had discovered the depths of spirituality. This loss caused a great change in his inner world. He gave up everything and wrote “Masnavi” which is widely recognized as the greatest Sufi poem ever written, consisting of 25 thousand couplets. For Rumi, true love meant love for Allah (God), and death was the day when he would unite with the divine.

That is why the anniversary of his death, which is December 17th, is known not as a day of mourning but as a day of celebration, and the Seb-i Arus means ‘the Night of Reunion’ or ‘Wedding Night’.

This year in 2024, between December 7th-17th there will be Seb-Arus ceremonies in many places. If you can’t catch one, don’t worry, it is a great time to see a Whirling Dervishes Show in December. The best dervishes show is, as you can expect, FREE with Istanbul Tourist Pass®.

    Kanyon

Kanyon is by far the coolest mall in Istanbul. It is designed like a canyon and this canyon is placed right in the middle of Istanbul’s business center. It is an open-air shopping mall and since its architectural structure is like a canyon, it can be windy as a canyon!

There is a limited number of shops and most of them belongs to luxury brands. Swarovski and Lego have stores on the same floor! There are also many great restaurants in Kanyon. Actually, Kanyon is generally preferred to have lunches and dinners.

Kanyon has a great cinema complex and nearly all gala nights of Turkish movies are happening there! So it is possible for you to meet with a Turkish actor or actress on the second floor. To be fair Kanyon is not a great place for kids and crowded families. But if you like to have quality time surrounded by people in their business suits, then it is a great choice. Since Kanyon is at the heart of the business center, it is really easy to go there by its direct connection to the subway.

    Ozdilek Park Istanbul

Ozdilek Park İstanbul is located in the heart of the business center just like Kanyon. Both shopping malls attract attention with their easy accessibility since visitors have the possibility to arrive there without being affected by weather conditions thanks to their direct connection to subway lines.

In Ozdilek Park İstanbul, visitors can visit 170 stores on 5 floors all of which receive sunlight thanks to large corridors with high ceilings. Also, Ozdilek Park İstanbul is a living center where visitors can have joyful times with their friends and family thanks to its 3,200 square meters of green terrace.

In Ozdilek Park there is a five-star İstanbul Levent Hotel of the international Wyndham Grand Hotels Chain and it hosts the River Plaza with its 2,000 white-collar employees under the same roof with OzdilekPark Mall. So it can get really crowded sometimes!

Ozdilek Park is home to many brands such as Adidas, Arçelik, Atasay, Bosch, D&R, Colin's, Flormar, H&M, KOM, MacFit, Mavi, Nike, Özdilek Hipermarket, Polo Garage, Skechers, Twist, U.S. POLO ASSN., and so on. It is great for crowded families as well as small brands; everyone can find something for themselves.

    Zorlu Center

Modern and cool, the Zorlu Center contains more than 200 stores that combine Turkish and international brands, luxury boutiques, as well as a wide selection of restaurants. The top floor is open-air, which allows for hosting small temporary markets such as a Christmas market in December.

The mall contains stores of luxury brands such as Beymen, Atelier Rebul, Vakko, COS, Moncler, Bulgari, Pomellato, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Lanvin, Dior, Miu Miu, Burberry, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Valentino, as well as Turkey's first Apple Store. Atelier Rebul is owned by Istanbul's oldest drug store and is a boutique selling specially made beauty products, we suggest you stop by. Eataly has a market in Zorlu Center so it is a great option to find some Italian vibe in Istanbul!

Zorlu Center is not only a shopping mall but it has a great center for performance arts hosting musicals, shows, and concerts. You can catch an international event there or see a musical if you can find tickets! The mall also contains a five-star Raffles Hotel under the same roof.

Like Kanyon and Ozdilek Park, Zorlu Center has also a direct link to metro lines so it is really easy to get there.

    Cevahir Istanbul

As they called it Cevahir Shopping and Entertainment Center is a huge mall that is home to more than 300 brands, 3 cinemas, and an indoor theme park on its 6 floors!  And also in the mall, there is a huge clock on the ceiling which is the second-largest clock in the world.

Kids and big families love Cevahir because it has many spaces for kids and a huge food court with various food options. From 10 am to 10 pm there are many things to do in this shopping mall and since it is at the heart of Istanbul, it is very close to other attractions

It is very easy to access because of its central location. Both with metro and metrobus you can arrive there without thinking about the traffic. In Cevahir, there is a baby care room, an all children's toilet, an exchange office, a mosque, and a free stroller service for parents in need. • Best districts in Istanbul only Istanbulites know

Istanbul is a vast city, with so much to offer. Although there are so many spectacular places that almost all tourists have on their lists, you can get the most out of the city only by experiencing how life for a true Istanbulite is. Below destinations are the places only ones who have good taste hang out.

    Cihangir

Cihangir is just attached to Taksim, the side facing Bosphorus. It has its name after Cihangir, the beloved son of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan who died so young. Cihangir definitely has a style and a soul. Cihangir definitely has a style and a soul. Today, Cihangir is called an “artists’ and intellectuals’ distinct” with its residents of writers, actors, painters, and musicians. Also, it is a popular spot amongst the queer community. Although there are not many tourists, this place is one of the most preferred districts to live by expats. It is an extremely popular and lively neighborhood with magnificent sea views from the streets, cats on every corner, record shops, jazz sound rising from the corners, new generation cafes, minibars, hipsters, daily DJ performances in small shops, and famous bakeries. It is such an attractive place that even a single chair you can grab on the sidewalks is precious.

    Nişantaşı

You may choose to remember Nişantaşı, one of the faces of modern Istanbul, with its old apartments or its architecture. However, when Nişantaşı is mentioned, only one thing comes to mind: shopping. This district, which has been identified with the middle-upper class and elites of Istanbul for more than 50 years, is known for its stores of world-famous brands, luxury and stylish cafes, entertainment venues and art galleries. It is one of the few streets with the highest rental prices in Turkey. In this district there is life the moment you step on the street, everything you want is at your fingertips. You can do many different activities on the same day here, and spending quality time is guaranteed. Nisantasi, which is illuminated from all sides in the New Year, is definitely worth seeing.

    Bagdat Caddesi

Baghdad Street and the coastline stretching along the sea parallel to it offer us a different kind of beauty than the European side. This is definitely a more peaceful place where life flows in a different rhythm than on the European Side. You can walk around and enjoy this district day and night, regardless of young, old or child. You can shop to the fullest, sit on benches, ride a bike on the beach or on the street, and skate. You can take your wine and have a picnic on the grass on the beach and look at the Prince Islands and this widest part of the Bosphorus. You can also enjoy many bars, clubs or restaurants with their unique style in the evenings. You can reach Baghdad Street by public transport, or you can choose to rent a car to wander along the coastline.

    Ortaköy-Bebek-Sarıyer

This coastline starting from Kuruçeşme to Sarıyer is one of the districts where the wealthiest people of Istanbul live. It is also the place where you can feel the spirit of Istanbul and the Bosphorus most clearly. Along this entire coastline are restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the deep blue waters of the Bosphorus. Neighborhoods such as Bebek, Emirgan, and Arnavutköy in this line are among the places where celebrities hang out most often. You can start from one end of this coastline and walk as far as you can. There are also boat tours that run along this lane. Renting a car may not be a good option for the heavy traffic in this lane. Look across the Bosphorus and enjoy the true spirit of Istanbul.

That is the story behind our sister Pass® the Cappadocia Travel Pass®. You can check out the incredible offers here.

In this article, we’d like to share with you everything you need to travel from İstanbul to Cappadocia and more. Let’s start the journey!

From Istanbul to Cappadocia: How to Get There?

There are plenty of transport choices to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia. You can decide depending on your time, budget or style. Here are the best ways to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia.

    Flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia

If you want to save time, getting to Cappadocia from İstanbul by plane is the best option. By 2022, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines offers regular flights to the Cappadocia region's two airports, and the flight time is around 80 minutes.

The two airports are Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and Kayseri Erkilet Airport. From İstanbul to both airports, there are flights getting on from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

Turkey’s flag carrier Turkish Airlines offers the most options for Cappadocia flights. Pegasus Airlines can reduce the number of flights during off-season times but you can also check their website to see the seasonal situation.

Before you pick your ticket, consider that there are some differences between Cappadocia's two airports. Kayseri Erkilet Airport is around 80 kilometers east of the center of Cappadocia. The newer one, Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is roughly 40 kilometers northwest of the center.

You don’t need to worry about getting from the airport to your hotel. We know how tiring can be to plan and make all the arrangements when you go somewhere new. For that reason Cappadocia Travel Pass®. offers you discounted Private Transfer from/to Cappadocia from/to both Kayseri and Nevşehir airports. So you can safely and comfortably arrive at your hotel by paying less than other tourists! Although there are other options like airport shuttle buses and taxis, it is the fastest and the most comfortable option.

    Bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia

There are bus companies that offer direct transport from Istanbul to Nevşehir Bus Station. Bus Station in Nevşehir is around 18 kilometers far from the Cappadocia region.

Some of the bus companies are Nevşehir Seyahat, Kamil Koç, and Metro; and the travel takes around 11 hours. So if you plan to get there by bus, it may be a good choice to take an evening bus and get there in the morning. Since there is no difference between the ticket prices of the companies, you can decide by looking at the departure times.

Although it is a long trip, buses are generally comfortable with their airline-style seating, and individual entertainment systems and they provide electricity for charging your phones. Traditionally on every bus trip, there are complimentary hot and cold drinks and a snack in Turkey, so enjoy them

When you get there, you can use the discounted private transportation of Cappadocia Travel Pass® to your hotel -which is the best way- or you take a local minibus to get to your hotel’s area.

    Trains from Istanbul to Cappadocia

First things first: there are no direct trains from İstanbul to Nevşehir or Kayseri. But if you’d like a train trip then you can still go there by changing trains.

    Fun exhibits surprise your brain!

In the Museum of Illusions in Istanbul, there are many to see and enjoy. There are different parts of the museum and all of which are very Instagrammable!

Here are some exhibits inside the Museum of Illusions.

    Photo illusions

Photo Illusions are creative ways to confuse your mind and create false perceptions of things that don’t exist. Sounds promising! And we all know the saying: The camera never lies!? I wouldn’t be so sure! Nothing is what it seems in the Museum of Illusions, not even the pictures! The only thing you can be sure of is that your photos will be filled with an unusual and unexpected background. Come and explore!

    Optical illusions

Unexplainable images that play tricks on you, confusing your eyes and brain. These visual illusions are just a reminder that our senses are flawed and our perception of the world is often misinterpreted. Come and check out our exhibition of optical illusions with many Op art exhibits!

    Holograms

Holograms – those magical images that create 3D illusions and which we encounter every day in all kinds of shapes and forms e.g. in their simplified form on bank notes or credit cards. Our Museum of Illusions holds a quite respectable collection of various holograms e.g. images that disappear without reason, change their motif, or pop out of the picture.

    Beuchet Chair Illusion

It is unbelievable how the perceived size of a person depends on the context suggested by the surrounding objects. Explore the laws of perception and play with roles and size ratios by simply sitting on the so-called Beuchet chair! Challenge your photography creativity!

    Infinity Tunnel

There are so many things in life that we tend to compare with a bottomless pit even though we have never actually seen one. Well, now’s your chance. Get dragged into the unknown!

    True Mirror

Mirrors are believed to carry the energy of ancestors into your present life. But Mirrors also kind of lie! In a True Mirror right and left aren’t flipped. Your reflection in the True Mirror is how other people actually see you and not necessarily how you see yourself. So – it’s time to see what you really look like… Ready?

    Stereogram

A stereogram is a picture within a picture. Inside each image is a hidden object which appears in 3D when viewed correctly. Bring the stereogram image really close to your eyes (until you touch it with your nose), your eyes cannot focus on the image and they look somewhere behind the image. While trying to keep the eyes off focus and by slowly pushing the image away from you, you will see the hidden object. Get surprised!

    Kaleidoscope

A wonderful, colorful, and continuously changing world of shapes and colors! In our Museum of Illusions, the psychedelic patterns are created exclusively by our visitors, as they will be reflected in the endless little mirrors. Go and kaleidoscope away!

    Clone Table

This illusion invites you to sit down with yourself. What appears to be a large round table is actually a circular clip, which reflects a full circle in two mirrors at an angle of 60 degrees. At the point of sitting down, you will be surrounded by 5 of your clones! Who is the better player?!

     Head on the platter

Have you always wanted somebody’s “head on a plate”? Well, now you can make your wish come true. Experience the illusion of a “head on the platter” and of a hidden body. But don’t worry, nobody gets hurt. It’s all just an illusion.

     Rubin’s Vase

Rubin’s vase is a famous set of ambiguous or bi-stable two-dimensional forms developed around 1915 by the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin. Well, you could keep flowers in it, but that would be absolutely inappropriate. Get intrigued by the potential of hidden faces and try to find them all.

    Hollow Face Illusion

The need to recognize faces is so deeply rooted in us that we will fill any hollow space that we are looking at just to see the face. What is the fascination here is that while looking at the face, no matter from which angle, it seems to follow us. This is based on our inborn knowledge that a face is convex and cannot be concave.

     Turntables

Black & white patterns create kinetic optical illusions when spun on a record turntable. Mostly designed in kind of endless circles. When spinning these 2-dimensional turntable discs we receive a hypnotic effect of this very curious optical illusion created only when in motion.

     Ambiguous Cylinder

The illusion of an ambiguous cylinder creates a special geometry shape, either as a quadrant or as a cylinder, depending on the direction of view. An object is placed in a box in front of the mirror so that it can be seen from two opposite sides at any moment. The visitor can rotate the object by 180 degrees by moving the handle to the left or right. The change of shape really challenges your perception and logic comprehension.

    Tricky Stick

This exhibit plays with our sense of space. The stick is attached to a horizontal plate that rotates so that the stick encounters a curved hole in its path. The human brain will automatically assume that the stick cannot pass through the hole, but due to the thought-through geometry, the stick passes through the hole every time.

    Ames Room

In one corner of the room, there is a giant, and in the other a dwarf! Experience how a person walking back or forth either grows or shrinks before your very eyes in this incredible room of illusions. To the viewers, it looks like an ordinary room, but it is actually cleverly distorted so that visitors experience an amazing visual illusion.

    Infinity Room

Most of us imagined a possibility where magic and fun never seem to end, and seem endlessly duplicated?! Maybe the Wonderworld of our Infinity Room will make your dreams come true! Enter the Room of Mirrors! found your wonderworld in the Infinity Room – the Room of Mirrors! The room walls are Mirrors of full height, installed all around, creating an optical illusion of infinite space. “The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away.” (Yayoi Kusama)

    Vortex tunnel

When was the last time when someone made your head spin around so that you felt like the ground was pulled away under your feet? And you were sure to be spinning nonetheless you knew that the bridge is actually not moving. You can’t control that reaction of your body. It feels like love, right? Or maybe just another illusion?

In both cases, it is important to let yourself go, so don’t be afraid to leave everything you know behind and immerse yourself in the illusion of our Vortex tunnel. The only one of its kind in this part of the world, the Vortex Tunnel will drive you mad and make it seems nearly impossible for you to bring your body in balance through the rotating cylinder – whereby you are all the time on a completely stable and flat surface. And – you are allowed to scream and laugh!

    Rotated Room

Are you ready to radically change your view of the world? How about 90 degrees? Have photos taken of incredible poses! The only limit is your imagination. Play with all your phantasy to interact with the illusion offering an Instagram shot!

    TURK Fatih Tutak

Chef Fatih Tutak's TURK Fatih Tutak restaurant is located in the Şişli district, on the European side of Istanbul. The venue offers traditional Turkish recipes cleverly reinterpreted into a fine-dining experience.

As the first two-starred Michelin Guide Restaurant in Istanbul, in TURK, there is careful attention to detail in the food preparations. These culinary preparations are genuine and precise, and more importantly, they express the chef's passion for his region and his roots. Chef carefully chooses fresh ingredients from local farms by himself.

Try their famous mantı when you get there. This plate is a tribute to the chef’s mother. Every day the menu is changed and announced on their website. So check the menu and make a reservation before you go. If you can’t find a table there, check out other Michelin Starred restaurants in Istanbul here

From public service to luxury tourism

    History of Le Vapeur Magique

Once the ‘Martyr Adem Yavuz Ferry’ now the Le Vapeur Magique, is a 456 gross ton steamboat with a length of 58.2 meters and a width of 19.6 meters, each with 2 diesel engines of 750 horsepower, which was built in 1976 as motorized passenger ferry at Haliç Shipyard. It was named after journalist Adem Yavuz, who was martyred after being captured by the Greeks while working as a journalist in Cyprus in 1974.

After serving 40 years in Istanbul, it took the name ‘Le Vapeur Magique’ and started sightseeing tours of the Bosphorus to serve Turkish tourism and the business world in 2020. Today it hosts a fine-dining restaurant, an event venue, a meeting room and other experience areas such as 3D Selfie Museum.

A living space with the world’s best view

Le Vapeur Magique is a floating living space today with a great restaurant. In its restaurant, it’s been serving traditional Antioch cuisine with a fine-dining touch. Routinely there are two cruises daily; one in the morning and one in the evening. But in some special cases, the ferry can be a concert hall for a jazz band or a hall for special events. Wouldn’t it be amazing to listen to smooth jazz while cruising on the Bosphorus?

This amazing Ferry has a meeting hall for 45 people with above-standard decor and technical equipment for private business meetings and a terrace area for 150 people that can be used in spring and summer. The meeting hall, which is open to food and beverage service all day, will be kept ready for use for special invitations and presentations. Le Vapeur Magique will be able to provide travel services to the business world, both at the port and on the Bosphorus.

What to eat and what to do?

Currently, Le Vapeur Magique has two different options for foodies: Breakfast or Dinner. For breakfast, they have a rich menu set and the food and drinks are unlimited! It is great if you love long breakfasts. While having breakfast, you can enjoy the magnificent Bosphorus view with a guide telling you about the landmarks. Throughout the breakfast cruise, you’ll be enjoying live jazz music and feel like you are in a movie. You can see the set menus here:

At dinner starting at sunset, you’ll be tasting samples of Antioch cuisine with a fine-dining touch. There are options with or without alcohol but the belly dancer is an inseparable part of this cruise! You will eat, laugh and take photos throughout the trip!

Other than the food you can also enjoy the ‘Selfie Museum’ prepared specially for its visitors. You will be a part of a famous painting and get a photo with famous artists!
