What is a Hammam?

Turkish baths, commonly known as hammams, are wet steam baths that originated in the Ottoman Empire following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The hammam originated in the Ottoman Empire and spread as far as the Middle East after being inspired by Roman baths.

A hammam is a setting for hygiene and mental and physical cleansing. It would be a shame to skip out on visiting one of Istanbul's more than sixty baths!

The hammam typically consists of three chambers. The first room is a cloakroom and is kept at room temperature. The second room is somewhat warmer but still warm around 38 degrees Celsius, and the third chamber is the warmest at 50 degrees Celsius, where we sit on a marble bench and allow ourselves to perspire.

Why Hammams are Great?

A hammam is a gathering place where you can expel stress and daily toxins and emerge clean and tranquil. Because the pores open up, the steam helps to deeply cleanse the skin while also releasing and getting rid of bacteria and pollutants.

Due to its smaller temperature differential, the hammam generally provides better support than the sauna. However, it is not advised for those with heart illness or respiratory issues, pregnant women, or those who are at least six months pregnant.

We advise against visiting a hammam after a big meal -wait at least three hours-, or drinking a lot of alcohol in order to get the most out of your session. Other than that you are good to go!

Mihrimah Sultan Hamamı

The architect Mimar Sinan constructed the Mihrimah Sultan Hamam beside the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque Complex between 1562 and 1565. This double hammam was built using a style of construction used during the classic Ottoman period and is accessible to both men and women. You have the choice of a dry massage, a body scrub, or a soap massage inside the hammam. You can even take a nap in a private room after using these services. Kılıç Ali Pasha Hamam

The famed Ottoman admiral Kilic Ali Pasha gave the great architect Sinan the order to construct the Kilic Ali Pasha Hamam between 1578 and 1583 as a component of the mosque and school complex for the Levents, the Ottoman navy's soldiers. This hammam is one of Istanbul's landmark structures and is well-known for its elegant architectural lines and imposing dome. Tophane is a neighborhood near the city's historic port. Cinili Hamam

On Kösem Sultan's instruction, the Çinili Hamam was built in 1640. The painted 'İznik-style' tiles that gave the hammam's name unfortunately no longer exist. Visitors to this Hamam, which was designed in the legendary architect Mimar Sinan's architectural style, can take use of alternatives for soap massage, body scrub, and oil massages.

Aya Sofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı

The Turkish baths continue to have a high reputation among tourists as a dreamy and unique experience, even though the locals no longer frequent them as frequently as they once did. Between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, the Hürrem Sultan Hamam was constructed in the 16th century at the request of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's wife. History of Le Vapeur Magique

Once the ‘Martyr Adem Yavuz Ferry’ now the Le Vapeur Magique, is a 456 gross ton steamboat with a length of 58.2 meters and a width of 19.6 meters, each with 2 diesel engines of 750 horsepower, which was built in 1976 as motorized passenger ferry at Haliç Shipyard. It was named after journalist Adem Yavuz, who was martyred after being captured by the Greeks while working as a journalist in Cyprus in 1974.

After serving 40 years in Istanbul, it took the name ‘Le Vapeur Magique’ and started sightseeing tours of the Bosphorus to serve Turkish tourism and the business world in 2020. Today it hosts a fine-dining restaurant, an event venue, a meeting room and other experience areas such as 3D Selfie Museum. 

 

A living space with the world’s best view

 

 

Le Vapeur Magique is a floating living space today with a great restaurant. In its restaurant, it’s been serving traditional Antioch cuisine with a fine-dining touch. Routinely there are two cruises daily; one in the morning and one in the evening. But in some special cases, the ferry can be a concert hall for a jazz band or a hall for special events. Wouldn’t it be amazing to listen to smooth jazz while cruising on the Bosphorus? 

This amazing Ferry has a meeting hall for 45 people with above-standard decor and technical equipment for private business meetings and a terrace area for 150 people that can be used in spring and summer. What to eat and what to do?

 Currently, Le Vapeur Magique has two different options for foodies: Breakfast or Dinner. For breakfast, they have a rich menu set and the food and drinks are unlimited! On the Anatolian side of beautiful Istanbul, Emaar Skyview is located on the 47th and 48th floors of Emaar Square Mall. When you get there, you will encounter a breathtaking view of this beautiful city from a glass-viewing terrace. From the Galata Bridge, the Golden Horn, and the Prince’s Islands to the Bosphorus you can see many landmarks of the city. 

In this observation deck, you will see the city with an uninterrupted 360-degree view. There is also a SkyWalk section which is consisted of a whole glass floor. Kule Observation Deck

Kule or the Tower is the tallest building in Istanbul with a height of 587 meters above sea level. The Tower has 49 floors including four of which are underground. 

Kule Observation Deck is on the Camlica Radio & TV Tower which rises on the Camlica Hill on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The Tower is a new symbol of Istanbul, which is combining new technology with history and is surrounded by the natural beauty of Camlica.

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua, alternatively known as Saint Antonio di Padova, is the largest Catholic church in Istanbul, Turkey. It is located on İstiklal Avenue in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. It is an absolutely beautiful Church which was built by the Italian people of Istanbul in the early 18th century. 

The Church has been run by Italian priests but there are masses in different languages. On Sundays and Saturdays, there are masses in Italian, Polish, English and in Turkish. Hagia Triada Greek Orthodox Church

The Hagia Triada is a Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul where the religions meet. The Church was built in 1880 and is regarded as the largest Greek Orthodox sanctum in Istanbul today. It is still in use by the Istanbul Greek community.

The church is in the district of Beyoğlu, near Taksim Square and easy to visit. It is a beautiful masterpiece and a delightful surprise to come across in Istanbul. The garden of the church is also beautiful and tranquil. It is a popular church to visit so don't miss it when you are in Istanbul. 

 

House of the First among Equals

 St. George Church in Fener & the Fener Greek Patriarchate

This amazingly beautiful church is located in the Fener neighbourhood in Istanbul. It is called Aya Yorgi, you may need the Turkish name for asking directions. The church is the principal Eastern Orthodox cathedral and since the 17th century, it has been the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople whose leader is considered the primus inter pares (first among equals) in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Patriarch is the spiritual leader of millions of Orthodox Christians worldwide.

The church is open to visitors every day from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm. The St. George’s Church is also visited by pilgrims from all Orthodox countries. It looks plain from the outside but inside it is absolutely beautiful. Don’t miss it if you are in Istanbul.

Bulgarian Orthodox Church

The Bulgarian St. Stephen Church is located in Balat, Istanbul. It is also called the Iron Church because it is famous for its iron elements The church still serves the Bulgarian minority in the city. It is called Aya Istefanos in Istanbul, you may need to know this name for asking directions from locals. 

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Istanbul! The church’s garden is full of green plants and fruit trees. It has a beautiful Golden Horn view also. Cicek passage was built on the site in 1876. When it was built, it got this name because it was full of florists. With the opening of the first taverns in 1940, taverns and restaurants replaced the florists in the passage.

Istanbul's civilization goes back thousands of years, and the city will supply you with the old cultural soul you need. Let's take a look back at some of Istanbul's tourist attractions, as well as some of the lesser-known ones.

Galata Tower

One of Istanbul's oldest buildings is the Galata Tower, or Galata Kulesi in Turkish. It is located in the Beyoglu neighborhood. The 63-meter-tall (206-foot-tall) tower has a panoramic view of the historic district. It was built in the 14th century by the Genoese colony as part of a defensive wall that enclosed their district at Galata, which was directly across the river from ancient Constantinopolis. "Christea Turris," or "Christ Tower," was the name of the tower. The tower was used to keep an eye on the Golden Horn Harbor, where the Genoese traded with the Byzantines. Since Mehmet II conquered Constantinople, it was used to track flames.

After the Republic, Galata Tower was restored and reopened to the public in 1967. There is a cafeteria on top of the tower, as well as a nightclub that was dismantled after the last renovation in 2013. A pair of elevators will take you up, but to reach the panoramic terrace, which is 52 meters above ground level, you'll need to climb three more floors by stairs. Maiden Tower

The Athenian general Alcibiades built Kizkulesi on a rocky outcropping at the mouth of the Bosphorus in the 5th century BC to keep an eye on the waterway. The tower was converted into a checkpoint and customs area for moving ships after a chain was dragged from the ground to it. After several restorations in wood and stone, Emperor Alexius Comnenos built a strong defensive tower called Arcla, which means "Small Tower," in the 12th century AD. The tower was used as a lighthouse and control tower during the Ottoman occupation of Constantinople. After a three-million-dollar renovation, the final reconstruction was finished in 1998, and the restaurant opened in 1999.

Kizkulesi is now a well-known and luxurious cafeteria-bar and restaurant. Particularly at night, it offers panoramic views of the Bosphorus and the old city. Shuttle boats travel from the European side's Kabatas neighborhood and the Asian side's Salacak neighborhood to the tower at various times. It's also a popular tourist destination in Istanbul. The tower is closed on Mondays.

 

Beylerbeyi Palace

Established between 1863 and 1965, Beylerbeyi is a palace with a view of the Bosphorus. Beylerbeyi is a unique place where culture and historical figures coexist with the present. It is a majestic 19th-century landmark that fascinates with its mansions and impresses with its set gardens. 

Beylerbeyi Palace and its environs have hosted numerous structures since the Byzantine Period. After a fire, Sultan Abdülaziz had the house destroyed and rebuilt in order to strengthen it. The castle, along with its additional structures occupying a combined area of 3000 square meters, took on its present appearance between 1863 and 1965.

The sea pavilions, the historical tunnel connecting Üsküdar and Beylerbeyi, the Yellow Pavilion, Marble Pavilion, and the Barn Stables are all worth visiting. When visiting Istanbul, it's difficult to leave without seeing Beylerbeyi Palace.

Are Istanbul Tourist Pass attractions covid-safe?

Aya Yorgi Church was founded in 1751, according to Patriarchate documents. The Aya Yorgi Church, on the other hand, is a modern structure on the hill that was constructed of face stone in 1905 and first used in 1909.

Visitors to Aya Yorgi Church are there to pray and make a wish. They remove their shoes at the beginning of the path leading to the church, catch a whistle, and never talk for the duration of the journey. It is often claimed that anyone who ties ropes to bushes and walks down the path with a reel rope will have their wishes granted. The "way of torture" is another name for this uphill lane. The origins of this custom can be traced back to a biblical myth.

History of Aya Yorgi

The island was under siege by the Greeks during the Byzantine period, according to legend. The icons and religious artifacts in the church of Aya Yorgi were buried in the earth by the priests in order to save them. After several years, a shepherd on the island had a dream in which he saw Aya Yorgi. Aya Yorgi instructed the shepherd in his dream to ascend the path leading to the church and pause and dig when he hears bells. After a few days of this dream repeating itself, the shepherd ascended the path to the church barefoot and never spoke. When he arrived at the church, he heard a bell, just as Aya Yorgi had predicted in his dream. He started searching and discovered the religious symbols and idols that had been buried undamaged. Half-pilgrims are thought to be those who can ascend the "road of suffering" barefoot and without saying.

Visit Hagia Yorgi Church

You'll meet a lot of interesting people along the way, particularly if you go to the church on the 23rd or 24th of April or September. People of various faiths and nationalities gather to worship, socialize, and enjoy themselves. It's difficult not to get lost in the culture of this city, even though you're not religious. 

 

The Buyukada Aya Yorgi Church can be reached after a 15-minute stroll. The front door has a sign reminding you to be quiet and dress accordingly. About the fact that the church is not particularly large, it contains many fascinating symbols, motifs, sculptures, and religious monuments.

The icon depicting Aya Yorgi slaying the demon that emerges from the sea with his spear is the one that attracts the most interest. The symbol created by Aya Yorgi also draws a lot of interest. People leave a variety of presents, such as roses, in front of this icon to express their gratitude to Aya Yorgi. 

The stunning view of the Marmara Sea from outside the church would captivate you. The Yucetepe Kir Gazinosu café, which is located next to the church, is the main attraction. It is owned by a local Turkish family and offers excellent food as well as one of Istanbul's best views.

How to Go To Aya Yorgi Church

You must first travel to Buyukada. Since the island is so famous, ferries depart from a variety of Istanbul stations, including Besiktas, Bostanci, Sirkeci, Kartal, Buyuk Cekmece, Bakirkoy, Eminonu, Kadikoy, Kabatas, Yalova, Avcilar, Karakoy, and Yesilkoy. 

To get to the church, you'll need to hire a bicycle once you arrive in Buyukada. Since it is on the highest point on the island, nearly everybody knows where it is, even if you don't have a Princes Islands tour guide, you can ask around for directions. 

The Aya Yogi Church is open every day of the week from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Sundays, where it is open from 9 a.m. to 12.15 p.m.
