1. The Istanbul Archeological Museums
The Istanbul Archaeological Museum is one of the first three archeology museums in the world, with over one million artifacts from various cultures. It is the oldest building built as a museum in Turkey. It was established as the Imperial Museum at the end of the 19th century by the painter and museologist Osman Hamdi Bey and opened its door to visitors on 13 June 1891. The Istanbul Archaeological Museum consists actually of three separate museums: the main Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient, and the Tiled Pavilion Museum. It is home to over a million objects which represent almost all eras and civilizations in world history.
In the main museum, you will find on the first floor one of the largest collections in the world of pieces from Antiquity such as pottery, terracotta statuettes, as well as an impressive collection of coins, medals, badges, and a library of 70,000 books. Ibrahim Pasha was the grand vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent who offered the palace as a thank-offering for the thirteen years spent in his service.
The museum offers an extensive collection of over 40,000 pieces of Islamic art ranging from the 8th to the 19th century. An important section of the museum is devoted to carpets, you will find some dating from the Seljuk period, made in Anatolia between the 15th and the 17th century as well as several looms.
